Paisley // Black

Hello my beautiful friends!

It’s Dutchy Gazelle here,

I was just cleaning out my drawers and discovered that I have seven pairs of different patterned pants. How insane?! What can I say, they’re all pretty cute. This style is very boho-chic. I’m seeing it in a lot of surfer stores. These pants below were the first pair that started the trend in my closet. I bought them at a cute little thrift shop in Mornington, VIC, Australia. I kept the whole outfit pretty simple since the pants are so extreme. My goal was to continue the bohemian style but add a city gal element to the outfit with the heals and the watch.

My dad decided to join in on the modeling photos.

Bambi // Blues

Hello my beautiful Friends,

It’s Dutchy Gazelle here.

Cobalt blue is a huge trend this spring along with tea length skirts. The skirt trend was seen from Christian Siriano, Alice + Olivia, and Proenza Schouler  I love how it pops, and is a nice contrast to the winter trend; black on black. its a great was to keep things dark but not as gloomy. I’m loving all the blazers and dresses I’m seeing on the race this season. Since I’m a thriftier, I had to hunt a little harder. I found this cobalt- electric blue at a thrift  shop in Australia.

I decided to style this look to go with my electric blue tea length skirt. Add the hat and the heals, and your ready for a nice spring lunch.

City Girl // Ocean Heart

Hello my beautiful friends,

Its Dutchy Gazelle here.

I would call my self a city girl. I love the tall buildings and the food and shopping. I love the music on the streets and the bright lights late at night. Sometimes, thought,  its nice to take a break form the hustly and bustle and just breath.

So, what’s the opposite of the city? The beach. I absolutely love it. The ocean such a place of beauty and awe for me. The way the waves roll in and out. The soft sand beneath my toes. The salty air and the bright sun.

For this look I wanted to bring the city style and boho beach together. All while keeping it simple.

These photos were shot in Wollongong, NSW, Australia.

Buffalo Exchange

Hello my beautiful friends!

It’s Dutchy Gazelle here.

So, I obviously love shopping. I mean, I run a fashion blog for goodness sake. One of my all time favorite stores is Buffalo Exchange. I have (so far) been to about eleven different stores around the country. It’s not your typical mall chain, although there is one in almost every major city.

20140516-131948.jpg

For those of you who have never heard of this store, the first Buffalo Exchange opened in1974 in Tucson, Arizona by Kerstin and Spencer Block. According to the Buffalo Exchange website, this was the very first store that bought, sold, and traded clothing items and accessories on consignment. You can bring a bag of clothes to the shop and see what you can sell. You can either get cash for the items you sold or you can get store credit, which means you can use what you the money you made to by new, amazing, fashionable items!

Being a traveler/fashionista can be hard due to lack of cash flow. Fortunately buffalos exchange is great because all the clothes that I buy there, I can just re-trade for new clothes in another location.

Buffalo exchange is great for people who aren’t quite comfortable shopping at a thrift store. It’s a few steps up, yet still cheaper than shopping at your local mall.

20140516-131826.jpg

The standard prices range form $5.00 – $30.00. Name brand items, or pieces that might be brand new (or close to it) might be a little higher.

They offer a choice to donate five cents to a foundation of your choice.

One great thing the do, is allow you the choice to donate five cents or more added to your purchase to support a local ministry or foundation of your choice. its a great way to give back to your community. Any way, I just wanted to show you all my favorite store of all time. Go check it out and enjoy!

How to Thrift

Hello my beautiful friends,

It’s Dutchy Gazelle here.

Ah. Thrifting.

Over the years, I have had many people ask me how I do it. It’s funny when you do something so long, it becomes a second nature. When someone asked me how to thrift I’m always like, are you serious. But it really is very different than shopping at your regular mall.

First off, when you walk into a thrift store, there is a smell. I call it the thrift store smell. It’s basically the smell of a mall but without perfume, flowery smoothies, new clothes, and other beauty products. So. Try to imagine that. Think of an old rug.

Secondly, thrift stores can be pretty overwhelming. Nothing is in a real order. Unlike when you walk into a trendy store and find every thing categorized by size, item and style of clothing, a thrift store is organized in a simpler way. Basically all the pants are thrown together, all the shirts are together, shoes, bags, etc. If you go to a thrift store just to shop around, it can be hard to find your bearings. Cute clothes with be mixed in with some ugly pieces. If you go in a just find a handful of unbearable material, you can end up looking over the fashionable pieces.

If you decide to go thrifting, make sure that you have an idea of what you are looking for. Are you searching for an amazing pair of black skinnies? Or maybe you want a new dress. Either way, have the item in your mind before you go. When you get there, start hunting. Treasure hunting. Thrift stores are not for browsing.

Know your brands. It’s important to have a good idea of what brand prices are, to know if your getting a good deal. If you find a great top for five dollars but it’s a Walmart brand, you’ll probably find the same top in Walmart for the same price. Not a good deal. Now, if you find Calvin Klein jeans for ten dollars: great deal!

Say you happened to find those skinny jeans, make sure you look them over! Are there any rips or stains? Any loose threads? Try it on. How does it fit?

Remember, the item is in the thrift shop because someone didn’t want it anymore. The ideal reason would be that they just didn’t like it anymore, or maybe they grew out of it. But sometimes you can find rips and tares. If you’re a person who has the gift of craftsmanship, and is able to sew, by all means buy the thing and fix it up. But, make
sure it’s really a piece that is worth it.

After you make sure the item is in good shape, check the price. Thrift store prices are cheap. It’s pretty amazing. Sometimes, though, the price might be leaning towards a corporate store price. If you think you could find that same item brand new for a similar price, you probably wouldn’t want to buy it at the thrift shop.

Different thrift stores have different prices. Goodwill tends to be the most expensive thrift store, when St. Vinnie’s might be the cheapest. Keep in mind that thrift stores have sales as well. Each day of the week there will be a color of the day. All the items with that color will have some percentage off.

I really hope that this helped answer any questions you have about thrifting! It can be intimidating walking into a thrift store. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll have the confidence to to kick some thrift store butt and get some great deals!

Cue Macklemore’s song, “Thrift Shop”.

Funky // Firsts

Hello my beautiful friends,

It’s Dutchy Gazelle here.

Today’s look is all about mixing patterns while still maintaining the minimal look. I’m kind of reminded of an old thrift shop with a display of an old stripped chair sitting on a funky rug. I know. I just compared my self to furniture. Ha!

To keep it simple, I skipped out on accessories.

The items in my outfit are from thrift stores all around the world. That’s right. I said WORLD. I love to go thrifting in ever town I go to. This outfit has pieces from the U.S. and Australia. In Australia, they call thrift stores, ‘Op Shops’ (Opportunity Shops).
