Hello my beautiful friends,
It’s Dutchy Gazelle here.
Ah. Thrifting.
Over the years, I have had many people ask me how I do it. It’s funny when you do something so long, it becomes a second nature. When someone asked me how to thrift I’m always like, are you serious. But it really is very different than shopping at your regular mall.
First off, when you walk into a thrift store, there is a smell. I call it the thrift store smell. It’s basically the smell of a mall but without perfume, flowery smoothies, new clothes, and other beauty products. So. Try to imagine that. Think of an old rug.
Secondly, thrift stores can be pretty overwhelming. Nothing is in a real order. Unlike when you walk into a trendy store and find every thing categorized by size, item and style of clothing, a thrift store is organized in a simpler way. Basically all the pants are thrown together, all the shirts are together, shoes, bags, etc. If you go to a thrift store just to shop around, it can be hard to find your bearings. Cute clothes with be mixed in with some ugly pieces. If you go in a just find a handful of unbearable material, you can end up looking over the fashionable pieces.
If you decide to go thrifting, make sure that you have an idea of what you are looking for. Are you searching for an amazing pair of black skinnies? Or maybe you want a new dress. Either way, have the item in your mind before you go. When you get there, start hunting. Treasure hunting. Thrift stores are not for browsing.
Know your brands. It’s important to have a good idea of what brand prices are, to know if your getting a good deal. If you find a great top for five dollars but it’s a Walmart brand, you’ll probably find the same top in Walmart for the same price. Not a good deal. Now, if you find Calvin Klein jeans for ten dollars: great deal!
Say you happened to find those skinny jeans, make sure you look them over! Are there any rips or stains? Any loose threads? Try it on. How does it fit?
Remember, the item is in the thrift shop because someone didn’t want it anymore. The ideal reason would be that they just didn’t like it anymore, or maybe they grew out of it. But sometimes you can find rips and tares. If you’re a person who has the gift of craftsmanship, and is able to sew, by all means buy the thing and fix it up. But, make
sure it’s really a piece that is worth it.
After you make sure the item is in good shape, check the price. Thrift store prices are cheap. It’s pretty amazing. Sometimes, though, the price might be leaning towards a corporate store price. If you think you could find that same item brand new for a similar price, you probably wouldn’t want to buy it at the thrift shop.
Different thrift stores have different prices. Goodwill tends to be the most expensive thrift store, when St. Vinnie’s might be the cheapest. Keep in mind that thrift stores have sales as well. Each day of the week there will be a color of the day. All the items with that color will have some percentage off.
I really hope that this helped answer any questions you have about thrifting! It can be intimidating walking into a thrift store. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll have the confidence to to kick some thrift store butt and get some great deals!
Cue Macklemore’s song, “Thrift Shop”.
